This series consists of photographs, book proposals, memorandums, manuscripts, page proofs, budget files, chronological files and meeting files relating to the Publications Division's book development program. Included are correspondence with members of Congress with authors and publishers. Some of the book topics include works relating to Communism, the Hungarian Revolution, the United Nations, Cuba, the Great Society, "Negro Leaders in the U.S.," sports figures, and musicians. Also included are meeting minutes and correspondence between the Ambassador Najib Ullah and the Chief of the Publications Activities Branch regarding a book proposal about the Council on Islamic Affairs. These records were maintained by the Editorial Branch, and its predecessors, the Publications Activities Branch, the Book Development Branch, and the Publications Division.

Rita E. Hauser served as a speechwriter and campaign strategist for Richard Nixon’s first presidential campaign in 1960. From 1969 to 1972 she was the United States representative to the UN Commission on Human Rights.
